According to the NLN, "Simulation creates transformational learning experience for all nursing students and provides diverse perspectives on caring for patients across the continuum of care. Learning in simulation allows for situated cognition or learning in context - a concept at the forefront of contemporary educational reform." The pathophysiology lab at AAST allows students to learn about disease processes through real world scenarios. Rather than simply reading about a disease in a textbook, students work in groups or as individuals to collect data from low-fidelity simulated patients, assess that data to formulate a diagnosis, and develop a holistic plan of care.
In addition to the academic foundation standards for Health Science 3, NCHSE standards such as communication, teamwork, safety, professional behaviors, and legal/ethical issues are built into the scenarios.
